For decades Wingham has been known for it’s illegal drug dispensaries that sell cannabis and various pills, mostly concentrated on Josephine Street. The new legalization laws would have allowed area pot dealers the opportunity to go legit, start paying taxes and rent commercial space. Instead North Huron council flip-flopped on their decisions to tax cannabis in North Huron and decided to ban all legitimate sales of cannabis in North Huron. This is a boon to area drug dealers that don’t want to pay taxes, rent commercial space or want legitimate competition.
Numerous sources indicate that It was the same group of people that lobbied to keep the OPP away that pressured councillors to ban legitimate competition in the cannabis industry.
