– CORRECTION – POLICE INVESTIGATE DEMAND GIVEN TO BANK

(FORT FRANCES, ON.) On September 12, 2013 shortly after 9:00 am, the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a bag located behind the Northern Lights Credit Union. Officers confirmed that a threatening note was left with the bag for Credit Union staff with instructions to fill the bag with money. The note indicated that if the instructions were not followed then there would be consequences for other businesses or schools in the Fort Frances area. As such the Credit Union has been closed for business and a perimeter has been set up around the building with officers remaining at the scene.

As a result, as a precaution, police have notified both the Rainy River District School Board and the Northwest Catholic District School Board with instructions for them to “Hold and Secure” (correction of term) which means schools will operate normally but lock exterior doors and monitor who is entering the school.

The Rainy River District OPP Detachment members, the Fort Frances Crime Unit, Northwest Region Canine Unit and the Northwest Region Identification Unit are assisting with the investigation.

If anyone has information pertaining to this investigation, please contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.
