Community Safety project results in 91 charges

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, December 16, 2013

(Ottawa)—A weekend community safety enforcement project on the Transitway involving Ottawa Police Service officers and OC Transpo Special Constables resulted in 91 charges.

During the evening of December 14, 2013, officers addressed various municipal, provincial, and criminal offenses occurring on OC Transit vehicles and connecting properties. The teams monitored activities in the Blair Station, Billings Bridge and Hurdman Stations.

“We take the safety and security of our transportation networks very seriously and this project was aimed at reinforcing our commitment to hold violators accountable,” said A/Inspector Michael Laviolette. “The Ottawa Police Service and OC Transpo work together on a daily basis and this effort is an example of that.”

A zero tolerance approach was taken in regards to violators with full uniform deployment for visibility. The following results were achieved:

Charges:
3 Liquor License Act
3 Safe Streets Act
36 Trespass to Property Act
49 City of Ottawa Bylaw (Fail to Produce Proof of Payment)

Drugs Seized:
small amounts of marijuana and alcohol

These types of projects are undertaken throughout the year and will be repeated on future dates.
