(ST.MARYS, ON) Extensive study and consultation by the Town of St.Marys, the St.Marys Police Services Board, the OPP and representatives of the Little Falls School has resulted in some minor road signage and traffic control changes in the Town. The changes have been discussed and the necessary by-laws have been passed.
The implementation of the changes has ultimately resulted in safer vehicular and pedestrian traffic in St.Marys.
Of the many improvements one changed has caused minor confusion, this being the new school crossing on Queen St. East and Huron St. The new bright yellow school crossing signs are installed to warn motorists of a school crossing. They are there to warn everyone to “watch for children and follow the direction of the crossing guard or safety patrollerâ€. The direction of the crossing guard must be obeyed and traffic may only proceed after the crossing guard has stepped onto the boulevard or sidewalk.
This crossing is NOT a pedestrian crossover or a pedestrian crosswalk which would be marked by two parallel white lines painted across the road and an X in each lane approaching it. It would also have overhead yellow lights. (Currently St.Marys has no such crosswalks).
Hopefully this will clarify the new school crossing and make it safer for our children as they travel to and from school.
Remember “Please Slow down, drive with extra caution and watch for childrenâ€.
