(SUDBURY, ON)- On November 14, 2016, members from the Sudbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting stationary radar patrol on Highway 17, in the City of Greater Sudbury.
At approximately 11:25 p.m., a vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed and as a result was stopped for “Stunt Driving”.
Investigation revealed that the male driver had been drinking. Police conducted a search of the vehicle where a quantity of alcohol and drugs were located and seized.
Christophe GAUDREAULT, 37 years of age, from Temiscamingue, Quebec, was arrested and charged with the following:
Driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
Possession of a Schedule II substance – Cannabis marihuana – under 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
Race a motor vehicle – Excessive speed, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act
Driving a motor vehicle with open container of liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act
The accused driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle he was operating was impounded for seven (7) days.
The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, on December 14, 2016.
Every person convicted of Race a Motor Vehicle is liable to a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than six months, or to both, in addition to his or her driver’s licence being suspended.
The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol or drug consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
