Chatham-Kent OPP Weekend Report

(CHATHAM, ON) Over the weekend, the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received 33 calls for service in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. The time frame is from Friday morning at 1:00 a.m. until Sunday night

There were various calls for service consisting of traffic complaints, a vehicle fire, a wheel separation, R.I.D.E., an unwanted person complaint and motor vehicle collisions.

On Saturday, May 28th, 2016, at 3:17 a.m., a Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a deer on Highway 401.

Due to extensive front end damage, the vehicle had to be towed off the highway.

On Sunday, May 29th, 2016, at 3:22 a.m., members of the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 401 near Queens Line.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered the driver had left the roadway, causing the vehicle to roll over and come to rest in the centre median. The driver suffered minor injuries and was not transported to hospital.

On Sunday, May 29th, 2016 at 6:46 a.m., the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an unwanted party complaint at Wheatley Provincial Park.

Investigation revealed the male party, registered at the campsite, was yelling and throwing things at his site. The male left prior to police arrival.

Police attended his residence and warned him of his behavior.

On Sunday, May 29th, 2016, at 10:06 a.m., the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a wheel separation on Highway 401 near Kent Bridge Road.

The driver reported while he was driving westbound, on Highway 401, his rear driver’s side wheel separated from his vehicle. The wheel travelled through the centre median and across the eastbound lanes, where it came to rest in a farmer’s field.

As a result, the male driver, Amaniel BEYN, 45-years-old of Toronto, ON was charged with drive motor vehicle – part detach, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

On Sunday, May 29th, 2016, at 12:07 p.m., a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting RADAR enforcement, in the Construction Zone, on Highway 401, near Bloomfield Road, when they observed an eastbound vehicle exceeding the posted speed limit of 80 km/hr. The RADAR registered a speed of 153 km/hr.

As a result, the 21-year-old male driver from Windsor has been charged with stunt driving and will appear in a Chatham Court on June 29th, 2016, to answer to the charge.

The driver’s licence has been suspended and the vehicle impounded for a period of seven days, as per statute.

On Sunday, May 29th, 2016, at 1:23 p.m., the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a vehicle fire on Highway 401 near Charing Cross Road.

Investigation indicated a cargo van, which was travelling westbound, caught on fire and the driver was made aware by passing motorists. The driver pulled onto the shoulder and waited for emergency personnel.

Chatham-Kent Fire Service attended and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries reported and the vehicle was towed off the highway.

Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to remind the public that as the weather starts getting warmer more traffic will be appearing on our roadways. The OPP will actively monitor the “Big 4” driving behaviours; impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and seatbelt usage.
