(CALEDON, ON) – On Friday, July 8, 2016 an officer from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to investigate a collision which occurred at the intersection of Allan Drive and Highway 50.
Investigation revealed that a vehicle, which was travelling westbound on Allan Drive, proceeded to turn northbound on Highway 50 and struck two cyclists (ages 14 & 5 yrs.) crossing at the intersection. The cyclists received very minor injuries. The driver of the involved vehicle was charged with Careless Driving.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would also like to remind motorists to be more aware of cyclists and pedestrians during these warm summer months, exercise caution when turning onto or off of roads and highways, be attentive, and share the road.
Members of the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would also like to remind all cyclists to use safety equipment.
Wear reflective and bright clothing.
Use lights after dark – A bike must have a white front light and a red light to the rear or reflector if you ride ½ hour before sunset and ½ hour after sunrise and white reflective tape on the front forks and red reflective tape on the rear forks. .
Wear a helmet – By law, every cyclist under the age of 18 must wear an approved helmet.
Use a bell or horn – A bicycle must be equipped with a bell or a horn in proper working order.
