(MUNICIPALITY OF GREY HIGHLANDS, ON) – Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remind residents to beware of a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam in which someone, claiming to be a representative from the CRA, calls to inform you that you owe the government money and that payment has to be made immediately.
On Monday, May 4, 2015 at approximately 6:00 p.m. a Municipality of Grey Highlands man received a phone call from a male identifying himself as “Brandon MARK” from the CRA. The victim was advised that he owed $1,650 for outstanding taxes and that payment had to be made immediately or his file would go before the courts for collection. The victim was instructed to pay the outstanding balance with cash vouchers. He was only able to obtain three vouchers totaling $700.00 and when re-contacted by the scammer, he provided him with the access number codes on the vouchers.
