Camp Fire Safety

(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) – Summer is finally here! If you are a camper, you are probably looking forward to sitting around the campfire sometime soon! Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Wellington North Fire Service want to remind everyone how easy it is for even a small campfire to potentially become a dangerous and unmanageable wildfire. We want to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer around their campfires, by helping to remind campers of a few fire safety tips.

Fire Chief Dave Guilbault of the Wellington North Fire Service offered this simple tip, “If you plan to take your children camping this summer… then make sure you cool your coals. When you are finished with your fire, please pour water onto the cooling coals to prevent possible injury or the fire from spreading. Please be safe and enjoy the campfire season”.

Campfire safety tips;

• Always pour water onto cooling coals to prevent possible injury or spread of fire

• Ensure there is a convenient source of water nearby for extinguishing the fire

• Never use gasoline or lighter fluid to start your fire

• Keep your fire as small as needed for cooking and warmth

• Never leave a fire unattended
