(SOUTH FRONTENAC, ON) The Ontario Provincial Police have been stopping school buses to delivery safety messages to both drivers and occupants.
Students are being reminded to take the time to look both ways before crossing any roadway, even with the safety arm and lights of the school bus deployed.
This initiative commenced following an incident in Verona, ON, involving the driver of a school bus making no attempt to stop, while driving past another school bus with crossing lights flashing and safety arm engaged. The on-coming bus driver has been charged with ‘failing to stop for school bus’ under the highway traffic act which carries a stiff $490.00 fine and six (6) demerit points.
Students, parents, and teachers are reminded to emphasize the importance of safe student conduct in and around school buses, and all driver’s are reminded to stop for school buses with lights flashing and/or safety arm deployed.
