(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) On Monday, July 25, 2011 shortly before 5 a.m. a volunteer firefighter from Exeter on his way to work was driving along Line 20 at Road 140 observed a glow in the sky towards the south.
He checked the area of the glow and located a barn totally engulfed by fire. The owners of the barn were awakened by the volunteer fire fighter and the West Perth Fire Department was contacted.
The West Perth Fire Department with the assistance of the St.Marys and Perth East Fire Department fought the fire.
The barn a single level 200 x 100 ft pig barn was completely destroyed while the 600 sows and 50 guilding pigs inside were all killed.
The Ontario Fire Marshall’s office has been contacted by the Fire Department. At this time the cause of the fire has not been determined but a severe thunderstorm passed through the area just prior to the discovery of the fire.
