(SMITHS FALLS, ON) – Today, April 16, 2014, the frontline officers of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Region have received 4 new police vehicles equiped with the Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system. This is in addition to the one (1) unit already being utilized in eastern Ontario.
Officers using this system will be able to identify suspended or other drivers in a larger geographical area than before.
“The OPP is the first police service in Ontario and one of the first in Canada to target suspended drivers with their Automatic Licence Plate Recognition Program,†said Inspector Paul Bedard, Manager Traffic Marine, East Region. “This is another valuable tool that will help make our roads safer.â€Â
Through its continued partnership with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) and the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner (IPC), Ontario roads will be much safer now that the OPP has the ability to detect and deal with suspended drivers who continue to drive illegally. Officers will be able to detect thousands more licence plates in poor standing every day over a broader geographic range in Ontario, making it more difficult for suspended drivers, drivers of stolen vehicles and other vehicles to drive undetected on Ontario roads and highways.
These units will be utilized throughout OPP East Region.
