Almaguin Highlands Report

(BURK’S FALLS, ON) – On Wednesday September 28, 2016 at approximately 7:00 p.m. the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted an investigation into a trafficking of marihuana incident in Burk’s Falls.

The OPP investigation revealed that the accused, Dylan SMITH 19 of Burk’s Falls Ontario was trafficking in marihuana and was subsequently arrested and charged with the following offences:

• Traffic schedule II substance – cannabis marihuana under 3 kilograms, contrary to section 5(1) of the Controlled Drugs and substances Act (CDSA)

• Two counts of fail to comply with probation order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)

• Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was prohibited or restricted weapon, contrary to section 94 of the CC.

The accused was released from custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday October 13, 2016 in Sundridge Ontario

Police would also like to warn people about the dangers of taking nonprescription drugs. Drug use is proven to be harmful to individuals as well as the drugs may be laced with unknown chemicals or other drugs that may cause people have a sever or fatal reaction.

OPP ARREST SOUTH RIVER MAN FOR HAVING

MORE THAN LEGAL LIMIT OF ALCOHOL

(SOUTH RIVER, ON) – On Monday October 3, 2016 at approximately 4:00 p.m. members of the Highway Safety Division (HSD) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was patrolling in the Village of South River when they were dispatched to a possible impaired driver.

The officer observed the vehicle on Highway 124 in the Village of South River and spoke to the driver. The officer subsequently arrested and charged Ronald MAECK, 63 of South River Ontario with driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.

The accused was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday November 10, 2016 in Sundridge Ontario

ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS OPP CHARGES

MALE WITH FIREARM OFFENCES

(PERRY TWP, ON) – The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to reports of two gunshots that were heard in the Hamlet of Novar on Saturday October 1, 2016 at approximately 11:15 a.m.

On Sunday October 2, 2016 officers responded to the same area, this time in relation to a found firearm, a shotgun near the train tracks in Novar.

Police continued to investigate and on Wednesday October 5, 2016 OPP officers were granted a public safety warrant to search for firearms, weapons and ammunition. Police arrested Thomas STEVENS, 23 of Perry Township with the following offences:

• Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code

• Careless storage of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 86(1) of the CC

• Lost firearm or weapon not reported, contrary to section 105(1)(a) CC

• False statement regarding firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, contrary to section 107 of the CC.

The accused released from custody after a bail hearing and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday October 13, 2016 in Sundridge Ontario

SOUTH RIVER MAN ARRESTED FOR IMPAIRED DRIVING

(SOUTH RIVER, ON) – On Thursday October 6, 2016 at approximately 1:45 p.m. the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was patrolling the Village of South River when they were called to search for a possible impaired driver. Officers observed the driver in the area of Marie Street in the Village of South River.

A police investigation revealed that the driver had been drinking and was subsequently arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC) and Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) CC

The accused, Stephen GILSON, 55 of South River Ontario was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday November 10, 2016 in Sundridge Ontario

OPERATION IMPACT THANKSGIVING DAY RESULTS

(ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS ON) – The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) patrolled the Almaguin Highlands area this Thanksgiving Weekend. From Friday October 7, 2016 to Monday October 10, 2016 officers patrolled local roads, towns and villages enforcing Highway Traffic Act (HTA) offences, the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA), Liquor License Act (LLA), the Off Road Vehicle Act (ORV), Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and Criminal Code offences (CC).

As a result of the enforcement, officers issued 43 speeding offence notices, three stunt or racing charges, eight hazardous moving violations, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

Officers also conducted R.I.D.E (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) programs throughout the area and are pleased to report that there were no impaired drivers charged.

Almaguin Highlands OPP would like to thank the majority of drivers who drove responsibly.

ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS OPP ARREST MALE FOR IMPAIRED BY DRUG

(ARMOUR TWP, ON) – On Tuesday October 11, 2016 the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call that a male driver was driving under the influence of prescription medication.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. officers discovered the driver, Stephen KAHLER, of Huntsville Ontario in his vehicle. Officers spoke to the driver and subsequently arrested and charged the driver with care or control while impaired by drug, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday November 10, 2016 in Sundridge Ontario
