Almaguin Highlands OPP Weekly Report

MACHAR TOWNSHIP MAN ARRESTED FOR IMPAIRED

(STRONG TWP, ON) – On Saturday February 11, 2017 at approximately 11:45 p.m. the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was patrolling Tower Road when they observed a motorized snow vehicle (MSV) turn onto Hill Valley Road and travel at a high rate of speed.

The officer eventually stopped and spoke to the driver of the MSV and subsequently arrested Michael COUGHLIN, 30 of Machar Township with driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC) and driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) CC.

The accused was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday March 9, 2017 in Sundridge Ontario.

OPP ARREST DRIVER IN RIDE PROGRAM

(KEARNEY, ON) – On Saturday February 11, 2017 at approximately 6:30 p.m. the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program at Rain Lake Road and Pine Drive.

At approximately 7:15p.m. a vehicle approached the R.I.D.E. program and after a police investigation the driver, Anthony OLHISER, 21 of Perry Township was arrested and charged with driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC) and driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) CC.

The accused was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday March 9, 2017 in Sundridge Ontario.

ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS OFFICERS SPEND TIME ON THE TRAILS

(ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS ON) – The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has been spending time on the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club Trails (OFSC) this winter. From January 28 to February 12, 2017 officers have patrolled the trails throughout the Almaguin Highlands area this season.

Officers laid 33 Provincial Offence notices in relation to offences committed under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act (MSVA) and three operators were charged under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). Two drivers were arrested and charged with impaired operation and for having more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to the Criminal Code (CC) and one operator was charged under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act (CAIA).

The Almaguin Highlands OPP would like to thank the majority of snowmobilers who are responsible and remember if you have a few drinks, have a designated driver, stay the night or call a taxi.
