9 Year Old Attempts Rescue Of 68 Year Old That Fell Through Ice – Good Samaritans Rescue 9 Year Old

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Norfolk County detachment is investigating an incident at a Concession 8, Waterford, Norfolk County, Ontario address.

On Saturday, February 18, 2017 at approximately 5:08 p.m., OPP, Norfolk County Fire and Rescue Services, Paramedics and Air Ambulance responded to the Waterford North Conservation Area for a report of two (2) people falling through the ice.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that a 68-year-old male from Hamilton, Ontario and a 9-year-old male from Burlington, Ontario were on the ice of the Waterford North Conservation Area.

Both were approximately 80 feet from the shore line when the 68-year-old male fell through the ice while ice fishing in approximately 15 feet of water. The 9-year-old child who was skating around the pond, attempted to save the male when he fell through the ice. Several bystanders came to the aid of both males, at which time a Good Samaritan pulled the 9-year-old child out of the water. Several attempts were made to remove the adult male however those attempts were unsuccessful.

Norfolk County Fire and Rescue Services attempted to locate the male however the search for the male had to be suspended due to safety issues.

The OPP Under-Water Search and Recovery Unit have been notified. It is anticipated that recovery efforts will resume in the morning hours on Sunday, February 19, 2017.

Concession 8 was closed between Robinson Road and Highway 24 to allow for investigation. The entrance to the Waterford North Conservation Area and access to the pond will remain closed.

The investigation is continuing.
