22 Year Old Facing Drug Driving Charge – Name Released

(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – On January 14, 2017, members with the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to Emily Street in Parry Sound for a traffic complaint. Initial reports indicated that a vehicle was driving erratically. Officers located the vehicle and spoke with the driver.

As a result of the investigation,

David CONTIN, 22 years of age from Shawanaga First Nation, Ontario was charged with;

Driving While Ability Impaired By Drug, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)

Fail to Comply With Recognizance, (4 counts), contrary to section 145(3) of the CC

Fail To Comply With Undertaking, contrary to section 145(3) of the CC

The accused was held pending a bail hearing.

The OPP would like to remind the public that as of October 2, 2016, new measures under the Making Ontario’s Roads Safe Act have come into effect. Drivers under the influence of drugs will face the following penalties that match those who drive under the influence of alcohol. Such penalties include;

An immediate licence suspension of three days for the first occurrence, seven days for the second occurrence and 30 days for the third and subsequent occurrences upon failure of a roadside sobriety test

A possible 90-day licence suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment following further testing by a drug recognition expert at a police station.

Mandatory education or treatment programs, and installation of an ignition interlock device in their vehicle, for drivers with two or more licence suspensions involving alcohol or drugs within a 10-year period.
