Elgin County Weekly Update

(ELGIN COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Elgin County Detachment would like to consolidate and streamline our notable traffic offences and publish a weekly release.

On January 16, 2023, at approximately 2:37 a.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP (Chatham Detachment) stopped a passenger vehicle travelling on the Westbound Highway 401, Municipality of Chatham-Kent, after it was found speeding.

As a result of the investigation, a 24-year-old of Brampton, Ontario was charged with the following:

  • Speeding 1 – 49 Km/h over posted limit
  • Class G1 licence holder – drive at unlawful hour
  • Class G1 licence holder – drive on prohibited highway

On January 16, 2023, at approximately 2:39 a.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP (Chatham Detachment) stopped a passenger vehicle travelling on the Eastbound Highway 401, Municipality of Chatham-Kent, after it was found speeding.

As a result of the investigation, a 32-year-old of Camlachie, Ontario was charged with the following:

  • Speeding 1 – 49 Km/h over posted limit
  • Driving while under suspension

On January 16, 2023, at approximately 8:57 a.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP (Chatham Detachment) stopped a passenger vehicle travelling on the Westbound Highway 401, Municipality of Chatham-Kent, after it was found speeding 167 Km/h in a posted 100 Km/h zone.

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 33-year-old of Mississauga, Ontario was charged with:

·        Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed.

·        Speeding 50+ Km/h over posted limit

·        Fail to surrender insurance card

On January 16, 2023, at approximately 3:27 p.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP (Chatham Detachment) stopped a passenger to verify the driver’s licence status of the driver on the Eastbound Highway 401, Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old of Hamilton, Ontario was charged with:

  • Driving while under suspension.

On January 18, 2023, at approximately 11:04 p.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP (Chatham Detachment) stopped a passenger vehicle travelling on the Westbound Highway 401, Municipality of Chatham-Kent, after it was found speeding 170 Km/h in a posted 100 Km/h zone.

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 31-year-old of Chicago, Illinois was charged with:

·        Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed.

·        Speeding 50+ Km/h over posted limit

On January 18, 2023, at approximately 8:12 p.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP stopped a passenger vehicle travelling on Talbot Line, Municipality of Central Elgin, after it was found speeding 112 Km/h in a posted 80 Km/h zone.

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 40-year-old of Port Stanley, Ontario was charged with:

  • Speeding 1 – 49 Km/h over posted limit
  • Driving while under suspension
  • Fail to surrender insurance card

On January 19, 2023, at approximately 11:20 a.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP stopped a passenger vehicle travelling on the Eastbound Highway 401, Municipality of Dutton-Dunwich, to verify the insurance status of the vehicle.

As a result of the investigation, a 30-year-old of Guelph, Ontario was charged with:

  • Operate a motor vehicle without insurance

On January 19, 2023, at approximately 1:46 p.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP stopped a commercial vehicle travelling on Sunset Road, Township of Southwold, after observing the driver using a cellphone while driving.

As a result of the investigation, a 53-year-old of Waterford, Ontario was charged with:

  • Drive – hand-held communication device
  • Fail to surrender completed daily inspection report

On January 21, 2023, at approximately 2:49 a.m., officers with the Elgin County OPP responded to a single vehicle Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC) on Wonderland Road, Township of Southwold.

The lone occupant and driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old of London, Ontario was charged with:

·        Careless Driving

·        Novice driver – B.A.C. above zero

On January 21, 2023, at approximately 7:18 p.m., officers with the Elgin County OPP responded to a three vehicle Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC) on Bridge Street, Municipality of Central Elgin.

The occupants of the involved vehicles were uninjured.

As a result of the investigation, a 23-year-old of London, Ontario was charged with:

·        Drive – hand-held communication device

·        Fail to surrender insurance card

On January 22, 2023, at approximately 4:21 a.m., an officer with the Elgin County OPP (Chatham Detachment) stopped a commercial vehicle travelling on the Highway 401, Municipality of Chatham-Kent, after it was found speeding 120 Km/h in a posted 100 Km/h zone.

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 28-year-old of Kitchener, Ontario was charged with:

·        Speeding 1 – 49Km/h over posted limit

·        Drive commercial motor vehicle not equipped with working speed-limiting system

·        Fail to surrender insurance card

Additionally, the commercial vehicle operator, a company from Calgary, Alberta was charged with:

·        Permit operation of commercial motor vehicle not equipped with working speed-limiting system

·        Fail to monitor driver’s compliance

·        Fail to ensure daily inspection report is accurately completed

On January 22, 2023, between approximately 10:45 a.m. and 1:39 p.m., officers with the Elgin County OPP responded to 12 Motor Vehicle Collisions (MVCs) throughout Elgin County.

No serious injuries were reported as a result of these collisions.

Elgin County OPP would like to remind motorists that the leading cause of collisions during the winter months is poor driving, not poor driving conditions. Always adjust your driving to the current road, weather, and traffic conditions.

On January 22, 2023, at approximately 5:43 p.m., officers with the Elgin County OPP responded to a two vehicle Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC) on Wonderland Road, Township of Southwold.

Both drivers were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the collision is being investigated and currently no charges have been laid.

The roadway was closed for approximately 6 hours but has since been opened.

Anyone charged with Drive motor vehicle – Perform Stunt receives a 14-day impoundment of the involved motor vehicle and a 30-day driver’s licence suspension as per statute.
