(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) — The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of incidents this past week, here are some examples:
Mar 13:
At 12:18am a grey Nissan Sentra was measured to be travelling 167 km/h on Hwy 401 in the eastbound lanes in Brighton. The 20 yr old Mississauga driver was charged with Stunt Driving – Excessive speed. His licence was suspended for seven days and the car was towed from the highway.
A seasonal property owner on Beach Rd Trent Hills reported his shed broken in to sometime over the winter months. A Husky chainsaw and Stihl weed eater were stolen. Both items have ‘2676’ engraved on them. Investigation ongoing.
Police attended a Hamilton Twp home where an occupant attempted self-harm by overdosing on medications. She was apprehended by officers for her own safety and taken to a nearby hospital for assessment.
Mar 14:
Police responded to a domestic dispute in Campbellford resulting in one partner being arrested and charged with Spousal Assault and Domestic Mischief Under $5,000 due to damages to the interior of the house. Name withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
A Colborne business on King St East reported being broken in to sometime overnight. The culprit(s) entered the office by forcing open a side door and stole a black Samsung Galaxy Tab A tablet. Investigation ongoing.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance in Brighton resulting in one partner being arrested and charged with Domestic Mischief Under $5,000 due to damages to a front door. He was released and faces an impending court date. Name withheld to protect the identity of the victim.
Officers responded to 15 motor vehicle collisions throughout the day due in part to deteriorating road conditions.
Mar 15:
Officers continued to respond to several motor vehicle collisions (23) as weather and road conditions worsened, the majority of which occurred on Hwy 401 (21).
Police responded to a domestic dispute at a Port Hope residence where a couple were arguing over money issues and the sale of their home. They were separated for the night and no charges resulted.
A gas station on Big Apple Dr in Colborne reported the theft of $120 worth of fuel at 4:02am. The suspect vehicle was a white pickup truck towing an empty flatbed trailer. The male driver, wearing a green jacket, was last seen entering Hwy 401 eastbound at a high rate of speed. Investigation ongoing.
Mar 16:
At approx. 1:00pm police received a report of a male yelling and running into traffic in downtown Brighton. He was reported to have also written on a business window and a truck with some type of marker. Officers located the man still causing a disturbance in the downtown area. He became resistant to police commands at which point an officer displayed his Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW). The male immediately complied with the officer’s instructions and was arrested for Mischief Under $5,000. Trenton Kenneth NICHOLS age 40 of Brighton, Ontario is charged with two counts of Mischief Under $5,000 and is scheduled for a bail hearing on March 17, 2017.
A resident on Ough’s Rd Port Hope reported his car ‘egged’ sometime overnight.
Police attended a Colborne residence at 11:45pm when a guest refused to leave. Officers ensured that the visitor left in a taxi. No charges resulted.
Northumberland OPP officers investigated 6 accidental 911 calls, 46 motor vehicle collisions, 30 traffic related complaints and conducted 2 RIDE program during this time period.
