(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is asking residents to keep their guard up as the holiday season approaches. This is typically a busy time of year spent visiting with family, friends, neighbours and co-workers. An opportunity for kindness and sharing is lost on the con artists that continue to dream up new schemes to take your money.
On December 4, 2013 at 3:50 pm, the South Bruce OPP received a scam report from a resident of Paisley. A letter was received from “Revenue Canada†asking for personal banking information to “deposit a refundâ€Â. This scam attempt failed.
On November 29, 2013 at 2:00 pm, the South Bruce OPP received a report of a scam that was mailed to a resident of Kincardine. The letter notified the recipient of a $2,000,000 publisher’s clearing house super cash giveaway win. The letter was followed by a phone call asking for personal banking and credit card information. This scam also failed.
Fraud continues to be a multibillion dollar enterprise that will only stop when the con artists stop making money. There’s no magic to preventing fraud – if it seems to be good to be true, it likely is and you can’t win a contest that you didn’t enter in the first place.
