CONSTRUCTION WORKER DIRECTING TRAFFIC STRUCK AND KILLED

A 55 year old St. Thomas man was struck and killed while directing traffic earlier this morning around 11:30am July 2, 2014. The worker for FACCA Inc. Construction was directing traffic around a boom lift (a four wheeled vehicle with a long boom and bucket for lifting workers) that was being used to work on the Burwell Rd overpass bridge and was obstructing the west bound lane of the Highway #3 Bypass. The worker was directing traffic just east of the Burwell Road overpass bridge when he was struck by a pick-up truck travelling West on the Highway #3 Bypass. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Release of the deceased name is pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the pick-up truck, a 46 year old Aylmer ON man, and a 32 year old male passenger also from Aylmer were was not injured in the collision.

Elgin County OPP with the assistance of OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators continue to investigate the cause of the collision.

The Ministry of Labour is currently on scene conducting their investigation.

Police expect that the Highway #3 By-Pass will remain closed between Centennial Ave. and 1st Ave., St.Thomas for the next 2 hours to facilitate the investigation.
