On September 15, 2014 at approximately 10:10 p.m., Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers received a call to attend a Wellington Road 7, Mapleton Township home where the Blue Tongue Skink had been spotted. The home owner advised that they had purchased a used electric fireplace online from a Wellington North Township home approximately 2 months ago. It appears Voldemort had been hiding in the fireplace and went for a ride. The homeowner’s had noticed her dogs were behaving strangely and food was missing but assumed the growing grandchildren were responsible.
The lizard was placed in an aquarium by a family member and the previous owner of the fireplace was contacted knowing that the lizard may be their family pet. Voldemort was reunited that evening.
Police made a follow up call the next day to Voldemort’s family who reported he is happy to be home and appears healthy.
