(THUNDER BAY, ON) On Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at approximately 8:23 am, an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police Highway Safety Division (OPP HSD) was on patrol on Highway 11/17 south of Oliver Road when he came upon a two vehicle collision.
Both vehicles were south bound when one struck the other from behind. The vehicles remained situated in the live lane of traffic as they were contacting police. As the officer arrived, the drivers were instructed to move over to the shoulder portion of the highway.
After this initial collision occurred, a south bound vehicle slowed as they were approaching the scene of the collision causing a chain reaction with seven other vehicles approaching from behind and colliding with the one in front of the other.
Officers from Thunder Bay OPP as well as Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue and Superior North Ems responded to this major collision.
In total, ten vehicles were involved in the two separate motor vehicle collisions. There were no injuries reported. Several of the vehicles sustained extensive damage.
The investigation is continuing.
OPP would like to remind the motoring public, if you are involved in a minor collision on a highway, pull over to the shoulder portion of the highway as to not impede further traffic.
