(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON.) – Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Haldimand County detachment has charged five (5) persons with drinking and driving related offences from the past weekend.
Over the weekend starting Friday August 9th to Sunday August 11th, 2013 Haldimand County officers investigated 5 impaired drivers. Two (2) drivers were stopped as a result of concerned citizens reporting erratic driving, two (2) as a result of collisions and a fifth as a result of a police vehicle check.
Charged with Impaired Driving and Driving over the legal limit of alcohol are 56 year old Sylvia JAMES, 24 year old Taylor McCabe, and a 16 year old male all of Haldimand County, ON. Charged with Driving over the legal limit of alcohol is 27 year old Kristin COLES of Haldimand County, ON and 28 year old Alexandra CAROLAN-LAING of St. Catherines, ON. All five are to appear in Provincial Court, Cayuga, ON at a later date to answer to the charges.
“This is very disheartening that in one weekend 5 persons were charged with drinking and driving related offences.†comments Inspector Phil Carter, Haldimand County OPP Detachment Commander.
He goes onto say, “These quite easily could have been 5 deaths or more. Thankfully concerned citizens took the time to report these crimes. It takes a whole community to stop crime, we (the police) need your assistance. If you suspect an impaired driver please report it. If you plan on consuming alcoholic beverages plan ahead, arrange for a designated driver, take a cab or stay over. Just don’t drink and drive. Your life depends on it.â€Â
