Loaded Firearm and Incendiary Material At Secondary School – Two Faces Charges

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON.) – On October 31st 2013 at approximately 2:30pm, both the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service (CKLP) and the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) entered into a joint investigation regarding a weapons related offence.

Police received information that a male party had earlier attended the property of Fenelon Falls Secondary School with a firearm. The individual did not enter the school and left prior to any further incident.

50-year old Ian Douglas MIYAMOTO was later arrested in the area of Angeline Street North in relation to the weapons offences. Mr. MIYAMOTO has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, the unauthorized possession of a firearm and possessing incendiary material and has been detained in custody pending a bail hearing today.

Police located his unattended vehicle in a nearby public parking lot. The OPP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) attended as a precautionary measure and entered the vehicle where a loaded firearm and an incendiary type device were located.

Mr. MIYAMOTO’s spouse, 52-year old Catherine PORONOVICH, also from Coboconk attended the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service at 7:20pm Thursday in relation to the investigation and was subsequently arrested and charged for transferring a firearm without authorization. She too has been detained in custody pending a bail hearing.

The circumstances surrounding this incident continue to be investigated by both services.
