Driver Charged After Bicycle Falls From Car Roof

(CHATHAM-KENT, ON) On May 9, 2015, just before 1:00 p.m., Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a report of a tractor trailer that had struck a bicycle on Highway 401 westbound near Duart Road.

The bicycle, which was mounted to the roof of a Pontiac car, fell from the car and was subsequently struck by a tractor trailer.

As a result, the bicycle was demolished, and the tractor trailer sustained minor damages.

The driver of the Pontiac, 28 year old Melissa FUERTH, from Harriston, ON, has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act for having an insecure load.

No injuries were reported.

Now that the warmer weather has arrived, there will be many motorists traveling to and from vacation destinations with various items such as bicycles, canoes, and luggage mounted to their vehicles. The Chatham-Kent OPP would like to remind motorists to ensure that, when mounting items to their vehicles, that they are properly and securely fastened. Check and double-check.
