Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls this past week (Mon-Thur), here are some examples;

May 11:

– Brighton Landfill site reported that unknown person(s) broke into the scale room sometime over the weekend. No items taken. Investigation ongoing

– Report of a possible impaired driver on Ontario St Port Hope (7:30am). Officers located the 2014 grey Hyundia and determined that he was not impaired. He was however found to be a suspended driver. The 39 yr old Port Hope driver was charged with that offence and careless driving.

– An elderly Campbellford resident received a phone call from scam artists claiming to be from the ‘Canada Revenue Agency’. She was told that a fee was required to process her ‘refund’. She attended her bank to withdraw the money and was stopped by bank staff who contacted police. No money was lost however personal information was given to the fraudsters. – The owner of a parked truck at the commuter lot in Colborne at Hwy 401 reported that someone had smashed a rear window, entered and stole loose change sometime between 1:00-3:20pm. Evidence collected at scene, investigation ongoing.

– Neighbour dispute in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp over one cutting grass on the other’s property. Officers spoke to both homeowners who came to an agreement.

– A family dispute in Brighton turned physical when one returned home from work and accused the other family members of not doing any work around the house. Two people received minor injuries (cuts/scrapes). Officers calmed things down and they were separated for the night. No charges were laid at the request of the those involved.

May 12:

– Police attended a Hastings home (12:13am) for a reportedly suicidal teenager who had been texting a friend. Officers located the youth in his bedroom. He was left in the care of his parents who were making arrangements to get their son help

– Police attended a Brighton home (12:16am) where a father and son were arguing. Both were calm when officers arrived and the reasons for the argument were unclear, alcohol might have been a contributing factor. Neither were injured and no charges resulted

– Police were requested to assist paramedics in gaining entry into an elderly Hastings resident’s home (6:30am). Officers forced entry into the home and found her in her bedroom. EMS determined that she was ok, unknown why she called them

– The owner of a car parked at the commuter lot in Brighton at County Rd 30 and Hwy 401 reported that someone had broken a window, entered and stole change. Investigation ongoing

– A Seymour Twp man called police upset over unwanted calls and texts from his ex-wife of 25 yrs ago. Officers spoke to the female who agreed to stop any communication. No charges resulted.

– A Percy Twp homeowner south of Hastings called police to report a bear on her deck eating her bird seed. The bear had left prior to officers arriving (10:30pm). For more information on Bear safety visit: ontario.ca/bearwise

May 13:

– At 2:10am police responded to a domestic disturbance in Campbellford. As a result of the ensuing investigation, a 47 yr old man was charged with Uttering Threats to cause death or bodily harm. He was released with conditions until his court date. Names withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

– Police responded to a 911 call at a Hamilton Twp home where they located a suicidal 21 yr old resident. Officers apprehended the woman for her own safety. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

– Police attended a Brighton home after a man was heard yelling at an elderly woman. Officers determined that it was not a case of elder abuse, simply that the senior was hard of hearing

– Police were contacted by a motorist who observed several ducklings attempting to cross Hwy 401 (Cobourg area). Officers, assisted by a Shelter of Hope representative, provided safe passage for the ducklings that were reunited with their mother on the other side.

– Officers charged the owner of a dog after it went onto his neighbour’s property in Cramahe Twp and killed some of his chickens.

– A motorist on Hwy 401 in the Colborne area reported seeing a headless deer standing on the off ramp. Officers did not locate the animal

– Police received a report of a man and woman screaming at each other in a Campbellford residence. Officers attended a determined that the couple were arguing over the male being intoxicated. No criminal charges resulted and the man spent the night elsewhere (11:50pm)

May 14:

– At 12:10am police were in the area of East Townline Rd Port Hope in response to a complaint of trespassers when the officers observed a red pickup truck travelling on a side road. The truck was stopped and open liquor was located in the centre console. The driver showed signs of being impaired and was arrested after failing a roadside test. He was taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Bruce ARSENEAU age 35 of Oshawa is charged with having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on June 3, 2015.

– Police responded to a 911 call at a Seymour Twp home (1:40am). Officers determined that a couple had been arguing with alcohol being a contributing factor. They were separated for the night, no charges resulted

– Officers returned to the same Campbellford residence (2:10am) where a domestic disturbance had occurred 2 hrs earlier. The male reportedly returned and was yelling from the street. Officers located him back at the home where he was taken earlier and cautioned him about his actions.

– A Hastings resident reported being defrauded by a ‘Microsoft’ scam. $249 was paid to the fraudsters with his credit card. Investigation ongoing

– At 2:54pm an officer noticed a suspicious man in the commuter lot Burnham St at Hwy 401 Cobourg. The male was wanted on outstanding warrants from the Toronto and Thunder Bay areas. When he was advised that he was being arrested he fled on foot from the officer. OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and K9 attended the area which had been contained by detachment officers assisted by Cobourg Police. He was eventually arrested in a wooded area east of the commuter lot. After investigation it was learned that he was in possession of a stolen vehicle from the Toronto area and had also stolen a pickup truck from the commuter lot returning with the truck moments before the officer approached him. Sheldon MACLEAN age 57 of Toronto is charged with Theft of a motor vehicle (X2), Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (X2), Theft Under $5,000 and Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing.

– A Bell Canada worker reported his tools stolen from a work site on Mead St Brighton (8:30pm). Investigation ongoing

Northumberland OPP also conducted two RIDE programs, investigated 18 motor vehicle collisions and 29 traffic related complaints.
