(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls this past week, here are some examples:
Jun 15:
– A Campbellford senior reported receiving a call from a ‘Revenue Canada’ representative advising her that she owed $1,200 in back taxes. She recognized this as a fraud and told a family member who contacted police. No money was lost
– A homeowner on Lakeshore Dr in Hamilton Twp reported damage to her car and theft of lumber, plants and decorative rocks from her property sometime in the past week. Investigation ongoing
– A Colborne resident called police after being contacted by a collection company regarding a Bell account that she didn’t have. After a lengthy investigation, the responding officer determined that a person with the same name from Tweed was the intended recipient of the calls and correspondence. No identity theft occurred.
– An elderly resident at a Campbellford senior’s complex contacted police confused as to why she called. The responding officer ensured she was safe and was receiving the proper care for her dementia from staff at the residence.
– A Brighton mother contacted police about her 10 yr old son ‘out of control’. Officers calmed the child down and provided parenting advice to the caller
– Police received a call about a bear on an island on Rice Lake. The officer ensured that the caller, who lives on the island, was safe and provided her with the phone number for the MNR. The bear was not being aggressive, just an unusual sight according to the resident.
Jun 16:
– Two separate investigations were initiated at the Warkworth Institution regarding seized jail made weapons. Both investigations are ongoing by police
– At 2:00am an officer was on patrol on County Rd 28 Port Hope when he noticed a red Saturn station wagon swerving in its lane. He stopped the car and determined that the driver had been drinking. A roadside test resulted in a ‘fail’. The driver was arrested and taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Stanley LEWIS age 56 of Cobourg is charged with having Care and Control of a vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on July 8, 2015.
– Police are investigating two separate incidents involving the Beer and Liquor Stores in Hastings. On Sunday morning (June 14th) at 3:43am an alarm was registered at the Beer Store. Responding officers discovered that the premises had been broken in to and four cases of beer stolen. The suspects were gone when police arrived. Today, Liquor store employees discovered that someone had damaged their roof in an apparent attempt to gain entry. This incident is believed to have occurred on the same night as the Beer Store which was entered via the roof. The OPP Forensic Identification Unit (FIS) is assisting with the investigations which are ongoing.
– A Cramahe Twp man requested advice on how to get a restraining order against his son
– Police were called to an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp property where a taxi was stuck in the mud. Officers spoke to the persons who hired the cab and eventually arrested one man who was highly intoxicated and combatative with police. The taxi was towed out and the man was held at the Cobourg detachment until sober.
– A RIDE program on County Rd 64 in Brighton (1am) resulted in a driver registering within the ‘warn’ range (50-80mg). His licence was suspended for 7 days as this was his 2nd ‘warn’ result.
Jun 17:
– Officers spoke to a separated couple in Cramahe Twp regarding their dispute over child custody. They were advised to seek independent legal advice on this family law matter
– Police were notified of a possible collision involving a train and a man on a tractor at Lakeshore Rd Port Hope. Officers located the man and determined there was no collision and he was ok
– A homeowner on Harwood Rd Hamilton Twp reported the theft of multi coloured solar lights from his driveway sometime overnight
– A Hamilton Twp man reported a cell phone account fraudulently opened in his name. Investigation ongoing
– Police were called to a park in Campbellford after a mother accidentally locked her 2 yr old child in her vehicle. Officers attended and summoned a tow company who gained entry. The child was unharmed.
Jun 18:
– A driver attended the Campbellford detachment to report hitting a bear last night while travelling on County Rd 30 near Old Wooler Rd in Brighton. The car remained driveable and the bear ran off into the woods.
– Police were called to County Rd 38 in Trent Hills for an injured kitten at the side of the road. The officer transported the kitten to a nearby veterinary hospital where it was determined that the injuries were too severe resulting in it being euthanized
– Police responded to the area of Concession Road 2 Percy Twp to a report of two suspicious males on the roadway, one with a bandaged hand. Officers located the youths and determined that they had been playing ‘Manhunt’. They were returned home.
– A resident on Mill St Port Hope reported her unlocked vehicle entered sometime overnight. The ownership and insurance documents were taken. The caller was urged to lock her vehicle in the future and to be vigilant in the event that her identity is fraudulently used
– A young child accidentally dialed 911 when playing with a fax machine in a Brighton home
Northumberland OPP also conducted 9 RIDE programs, investigated 16 motor vehicle collisions and 40 traffic related complaints.
