Renfrew OPP Weekly News

(RENFREW, ON) – The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 101 calls for service during the previous weekend, including animal complaints, family disputes, and domestic disputes.

Speeders targeted on River Road

Speeders beware. The OPP will be focusing their enforcement efforts on speeders on River Road in McNab Braeside Township. Complaints from residents and studies show the problem is continuing and so the OPP will be strictly enforcing the speed limits for the next week. Until Monday August 31 anyone speeding in the area should not expect a warning for the offence.

Domestic Disputes

Officers responded to six domestic disputes over the weekend. No criminal offences occurred.

Animals in Hot Vehicles

Pet owners are continuing to leave animals in hot cars while they go shopping or doing other things. OPP officers responded on Saturday afternoon to the No Frills parking lot after a report of a dog in a hot truck. As the officer arrived the male was leaving. He was stopped and warned for leaving an animal in a hot vehicle.

Officers assisted with a report of several kittens left alone in a hot vehicle while the owners were rafting on the Ottawa River. On Sunday officers were called by an employee at River Run Rafting concerned about very young kittens inside a vehicle in their parking lot. Prior to police attending the employee was able to locate the owner and make arrangements for the animals to be removed from the vehicle.

“Leaving your pet unattended in a vehicle is one of the most irresponsible decisions a pet owner can make. Your pet’s safety is your responsibility. Placing them in a dangerous environment could not only be harmful, it could result in the animal owner being charged as well as being fatal to the animal. Let’s make this summer a happy one for all of our family members, including our pets.”

— Steve Toy, Senior Inspector Eastern Region, Ontario SPCA

QUICK FACTS:

Dogs have a limited ability to sweat; even a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening. A dog’s normal body temperature is about 39°C and a temperature of 41°C can be withstood only for a very short time before irreparable brain damage or even death can occur.

Excessive panting, drooling, and listlessness are signs of heatstroke in animals. If you witness these signs in your pet, seek veterinary attention immediately, move the animal to a cool area and offer it drinking water.

Leaving a pet unattended in a vehicle could result in charges being laid against you under the OSPCA Act and/or the Criminal Code of Canada.

To report an animal in distress please contact the Ontario SPCA at 310-SPCA (7722). Or your local police services.
