Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) –Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls this past week, here are some examples;

Nov 6:

– Police located a Brighton senior in the downtown core that was reportedly waving at cars passing by and bothering customers at a local business. The elderly man was taken home to family. Officers then made a referral to an agency that could help them with the gentlemen’s deteriorating mental health condition.

– A Hamilton Twp man complained about being harassed by two women he had met on a dating website. Investigation ongoing

– Complaint received about a white Honda Civic being driven dangerously by a female at 5pm on County Rd 28, Port Hope. A licence plate was obtained by the caller and although officers could not locate the car, an OPP ‘warning letter’ will be sent to the owners address notifying him/her of the driving complaint.

Nov 7:

– A suspicious man was reported to be living in a wooded area in Brighton. Officers located the young man and helped him find a motel room for the weekend. Police followed up with the youth and his family on Monday. Officers assisted him in finding more permanent housing in an area where he could continue with his schooling.

– A Campbellford area home owner reported that someone had entered their home and activated the water system causing the basement to flood. Investigation ongoing.

– Police responded to a noise complaint at an apartment building in Hamilton Twp. Officers advised the party goers to quieten down, no further calls were received.

Nov 8:

– A resident on Hoskin Rd Alnwick-Haldimand Twp reported damage to his mailbox

– Officers attended a Brighton home where an elderly couple were struggling with ones dementia related outbursts. Police assisted them by making a referral to an outside agency for help.

– Police attended a Seymour Twp residence in response to a motor vehicle collision. Officers determined that that the collision was the result of a domestic dispute between a separated couple fighting over ownership of their dog. As a result of the impending investigation, it was determined that one vehicle had intentionally struck the other vehicle. A female was arrested and charged with Dangerous Operation of a motor vehicle, Assault with a weapon X2, Utter Threats and Assault. She was held for a bail hearing. Names withheld to protect the identity of the victim. No serious injuries occurred.

Nov 9:

– A private investigator contacted police to advise that he would working in the Trent Hills area for the day.

– Two suspicious males dressed in black were reportedly entering vehicles on Oliphant St in Brighton at 1am. Officers conducted an extensive search of the area but were unable to find the males.

– Police were notified by CN of a train blocking East Townline Rd in Port Hope due to mechanical issues. Officers could not locate a broken down train. Both railways were contacted and a possible location error occurred.

Nov 10:

– A Brighton car owner reported damages to his silver VW while it was parked on Prince Edward St overnight. A rock had been thrown at the windshield, two side mirrors broken and the driver’s door dented. A pair of men’s white Coogi running shoes and a LTC cell phone were taken from the car. Investigation ongoing.

– A resident on County Rd 8 near Campbellford reported hearing a female yelling for help from a stopped brown GMC pickup truck at the side of the road. When he approached the truck it sped off southbound. This occurred at 1pm and police were notified 25 minutes later. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the truck described as an older model with a regular cab. Stirling-Rawdon Police were advised to be on the lookout for the vehicle. – Officers located a 62 year old woman at the side of County Rd 2 near Colborne who stated she was lost and needed shelter for the night. Police took her to a Cobourg area hotel for the night.

Nov 11:

– A pair of boots was reportedly stolen from a business on Grand Rd in Campbellford. After an officer reviewed video surveillance, it was noted that the merchandise had been paid for.

– A male at a Remembrance Day ceremony was apprehended by police at its conclusion. He had threatened self-harm after the events were finished. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he received assistance with his mental health issues.

– Officers were called to a Brighton home where an elderly couple were struggling with ones dementia which had been causing a lot of conflict within the home. The senior was taken by EMS to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police ensured that the family was connected to outside agencies for help.

– Several officers and OPP auxiliary members were involved in various Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout Northumberland County

Nov 12:

– Lights were reportedly flashing on and off in an unoccupied Colborne area building at 3:43am. Police and Cramahe Twp Fire Dep’t attended and determined that a CO2 alarm had been activated. The building was vented by the fire dep’t and the real estate agent was notified as it was for sale.

– A homeowner on Rose Rd in Hamilton Twp reported their mailbox damaged sometime overnight

– A homeowner on Lakehurst St Brighton reported a break in to his garage. Fishing tackle and tools were taken. Investigation ongoing.

Nov 13:

– Theft of Toronto Star newspapers continues to occur in the Brighton area

– Police attended a Hamilton Twp residence where one partner claimed to have been assaulted by the other partner. While on scene, officers noted several marihuana plants at various stages of drying in the basement of the home. As a result of the ensuing investigation, the male was charged with Spousal Assault. Both partners were charged with Possession of a Schedule II Substance; Cannabis Marihuana Over 30g. They were released with an impending court date and are not to have contact with each other. Names withheld.

– Police arrested a 20 yr old man and charged him with assaulting another male at a Colborne apartment building. He also faces several charges of breaching conditions of a prior release and an earlier assault involving a baseball bat. He was held for a bail hearing. Names withheld.

Northumberland OPP also investigated 28 motor vehicle collisions, 61 traffic related complaints and initiated two weapons related investigations at the Warkworth Institution.
