(RENFREW, ON) – The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 172 calls for service during the previous week, including domestic disputes, a stolen ATV, and Frauds.
Frauds
OPP officers in Renfrew investigated several frauds and scams during the past week. Most frauds were in the form of phone calls where scammers were trying to obtain credit card numbers, banking information or other personal information. Most people recognized these calls as frauds and hung up the phone. One victim reported being advised they had won a lottery. The victim sent large quantities of money to the scammers on several different occasions. The investigation is continuing.
The OPP are warning people to be vigilant and never provide banking, credit card or personal information to people over the phone. If you have been a victim please report the incident to the OPP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). You will help them gather evidence and identify new trends. By reporting, you can prevent others from becoming victims and help put an end to fraud. Domestic Disputes
Renfrew OPP officers investigated 6 domestic disputes during the past week. One female was charged with breach of an undertaking, one male was charged with disobeying a court order, and one investigation is continuing. No other criminal offences occurred.
ATV Stolen, then Recovered
An ATV was reported stolen from a residence, and recovered all within a matter of a couple of hours on Monday January 18. The owner called the police shortly after 6 am to report a 2014 ATV stolen from their property on Lavallee Road in Horton Township. It was stolen between 1 and 3 am. A snow plow operator reported finding the stolen ATV abandoned at an intersection nearby at approximately 7:30 am. There is a suspect in the theft and the investigation is continuing. Provincial Constable Chris Colton is investigating.
Theft
Police are investigating after a wallet was stolen on Saturday January 16. The victim reported placing their wallet on the roof of their car while they placed items in the trunk at Calabogie Ski Resort near 4pm. They believe someone stole the wallet while they were busy at the trunk. Always keep valuables safe in your possession or locked up.
On Thursday January 21 at 2:50 pm someone stole a quantity of gas from No Frills gas bar in Renfrew. A green four door car attended and a male pumped the gas into the car. No attempt was made to pay for the gas and the male drove off. Police are obtaining video footage of the incident. Provincial Constable Sarah Darraugh is investigating.
