Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 208 incidents over this four day period, here are some examples:

Aug 15:

Hamilton Twp reported damage to their gate and lock at a gravel pit on Nagle Road over the weekend. Garbage and empty alcohol containers were left behind requiring a considerable amount of clean up by township staff.

A visitor from the Philippines reported her purse stolen at 1:51pm at the Big Apple in Colborne. She advised police that two males sat at an outdoor table behind where she was sitting. One male dropped money on the ground creating a distraction while the other male grabbed her purse and ran to an awaiting 4 door beige car being driven by a third male. The two original suspects are described as in their mid-30’s, dark skinned both wearing blue/grey Tommy Hilfiger shirts. Investigation ongoing.

Several calls were received from a Campbellford residence where an intoxicated female swore at call takers and officers when they attended. The reasons for calling were ambiguous and further calls for clarification went unanswered.

Report of gunshots heard in the area of Whites Rd Brighton at 9:51pm. Officers were unable to locate the source of the noise.

Aug 16:

A Mississauga youth called 911 to complain that her parents forced her to go on vacation with them at a rental cottage in Trent Hills. The youth was cautioned for misuse of the emergency number.

A Colborne area business owner was arrested on the strength of a committal warrant for provincial offence convictions; Obstruction of a Health Inspector and Failing to comply with a Provincial Probation Order. He was taken directly to jail to serve a period of custody imposed by the Cobourg Provincial Offences Court.

911 was accidentally dialed by a Colborne area grandmother who was having a conversation with her grandson on how the emergency line works. Officers attended and ensured there was no emergency.

A complaint of an intoxicated man stumbling around in a parking lot on Grand Rd Campbellford resulted in a 30 yr old Seymour Two man being arrested and charged accordingly. He was held until sober.

Aug 17:

An 18 yr old Toronto driver was measured travelling 186 km/h on Hwy 401 in the Brighton area. His licence was suspended for 7 days and his 2014 Lexus was impounded for the same period of time. He told the officer he was in a hurry to see his girlfriend in Montreal.

The Warkworth Golf Club reported a break in to the maintenance shop sometime overnight. A laptop, tools and an expensive driver were taken. Investigation ongoing.

The Municipality of Brighton reported their ‘honesty box’ located at the Brighton Municipal Boat Launch damaged and money stolen sometime overnight.

A stolen 1998 Peterbuilt Crane Truck from the Toronto area was recovered on Centennial Lane in Seymour Twp. Kyle DISHINGTON age 41 from Toronto was arrested and charged with Theft of a motor vehicle, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 and driving while disqualified. He was held for a bail hearing scheduled on August 18, 2016.

A request to check on the well-being of a senior in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp resulted in him temporarily being placed in a nursing home to allow for the clean-up of his residence which contained a days-old dead pet. No charges resulted.

Aug 18:

Report of a man yelling and screaming in downtown Brighton resulted in a 34 yr old local man being arrested and charged for being intoxicated in a public place. He was held until sober.

Warkworth Institution reported finding drugs on an inmate. Investigation ongoing.

A red e-bike that was displayed for sale was reported stolen from a property on County Rd 2 (near Pentecostal Rd) in Hamilton Twp.

**Northumberland OPP officers also investigated eight accidental 911 calls, six motor vehicle collisions, 42 traffic related complaints and conducted three RIDE programs during this time period.
