Weekend Wrap Up – Plane Crash, Drunk Driver, Boat Explosion

(KENORA, ON) On Friday, August 30, 2013, approximately 5:15 pm officers from the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised that a small personal aircraft had crashed on takeoff after leaving Upper Louise Lake north-west of Kenora. Officers attended the crash scene and discovered that the single engine Cessna 180 on floats carrying two occupants attempted a take-off from Upper Louise Lake. The plane lost power approximately 150 feet off the water causing the pilot to fly it into the trees on the west shoreline of the lake. The plane was extensively damaged however the pilot and passenger were uninjured. Transport Canada was subsequently advised of the crash by police.

Members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged two persons with alcohol related driving offences over the long weekend. On Sunday, September 1, 2013 approximately 1:20 am officers stopped a vehicle on Second Street South in the city of Kenora; the driver had been drinking, was arrested and returned to detachment. 35-year-old Sheri Lynne RICKLEFS of Kenora has been charged with impaired driving. She will attend court in Kenora October 3, 2013 to answer to the charge.

On Sunday, September 1, 2013 approximately 4:30 am officers stopped a vehicle on Ninth Street North in the city of Kenora. The driver of the vehicle failed the roadside test and was subsequently arrested and returned to detachment. 45-year-old Angela PAISHK of Kenora has been charged with exceeding the legal limit; she will attend court in Kenora October 3, 2013 to answer to the charge.

On Monday, September 2, 2013 approximately 3:30 pm officers from the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended in the area of Moth Lake on Hwy 17 west of Kenora in response to a report of a vehicle fire. Officers learned that a westbound vehicle was forced to pull to the side of the road as a result of a fire under the car. The Fire Department also attended the scene. The occupants of the vehicle were uninjured and the cause of the fire is suspected to be mechanical. Hwy 17 was closed for approximately 45 minutes as a result of the incident.

On Monday, September 2, 2013 approximately 7:15 pm officers from the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a report of a boat explosion on Lake of the Woods in the area of the Bear Point Marina on Bald Indian Bay east of Kenora. Officers attended the scene and learned that occupants of the boat were transporting gas cans to a cottage when the boat exploded in the bay while it was leaving the marina. The four passengers in the 5.6 meter fiberglass boat ended up in the lake as a result of the explosion and were rescued by individuals from the marina. The males aged 59, 56, 49 and 22 all from Winnipeg were taken to hospital in Kenora by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The males were later transferred to hospital in Winnipeg. The Kenora Fire Department also attended the scene. The Ontario Fire Marshall’s office has been contacted and investigation into the incident is continuing.
