Waterloo Region, ON – The driver of a vehicle that struck a Waterloo Regional Police officer on September 7, 2013, has been arrested and is facing numerous charges. The male was located at a residence on Northgate Drive, Waterloo last evening. Emergency Response officers set up containment of the house and arrested the man at approximately 10 p.m.
A 28 year old Waterloo man faces charges including Dangerous Driving Causing Bodily Harm, Aggravated Assault and Fail to Comply with an Undertaking. He appears in court today. Two other persons located at the residence at the time were released unconditionally.
Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on September 7, 2013, the occupants of a vehicle wanted in connection with a shoplifting incident from a local supermarket were located by police in a parking lot on Sheldon Avenue in Kitchener. As the officer attempted an arrest, the driver allegedly accelerated toward the officer who discharged his service firearm. The officer was struck by the fleeing vehicle.
The officer was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released for a leg injury. None of the vehicle occupants were struck by gunfire.
The suspect vehicle was located on Carwood Place, Kitchener a short time later and two men were arrested nearby. A 24 year old Kitchener man was charged with Theft and Possession under $5000 and Breach of Probation. A 22 year old male was released unconditionally. A 24 year old Woolwich Township female, an occupant of the vehicle, was arrested and charged with an unrelated offence.
