Warning – Methamphetamine Being Sold As Ecstasy

Police have recently investigated incidents involving members of the community specifically young people, purchasing what they believe is MDMA (ecstasy), only to realize the drug they bought is in fact Methamphetamine (speed).

Police want to warn anyone who is involved with the purchase/use of drugs such as MDMA (ecstasy) and Methamphetamine (speed) that both drugs are synthetically produced and the buyer/user will never know what ingredients are in the drug. Past investigations where police have seized and analysed MDMA, resulted in Meth being an ingredient, MDMA, caffeine and other carcinogens.

The CKPS would like to remind everyone, especially our youth that synthetically produced drugs such as MDMA and Methamphetamine come in various forms (pills, capsules, crystalized powder) and may look similar in appearance. These drugs are extremely dangerous and may contain a variety of ingredients. There is no way of knowing what combination could prove to be potentially fatal.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to remind everyone about the dangers of drugs:

MDMA (Ecstasy)
– Teens will hear that this drug will enhance their senses and that they’ll love everyone
– This drug is dangerous because it can cause severe dehydration, liver and heart failure and even death
– Signs of abuse include: teeth clenching, chills, sweating, dehydration, anxiety, unusual displays of affection
– MDMA can be addictive and is a popular drug of choice among young people because of its stimulant properties

Methamphetamine (Speed)
– Teens will hear that this drug will keep you going for days
– This drug is dangerous because long-term use or high dosages can cause psychotic behaviour
– Signs of abuse include: nervous physical activity, scabs, open sores, decreased appetite and inability to sleep
– Meth has a high potential for abuse and addiction, putting our youth at risk and increasing their chances of being involved in criminal activity
