Walleye Fishing Weekend

(BRIGHTON, ON) –During this weekend’s Walleye World Fishing Derby which takes place May 6 to May 8, 2016, the Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind boaters that being well-prepared is the key to safe and enjoyable boating.

Check your Boat. Familiarize yourself with the boat you are operating. Check the condition of your vessel and ensure it is properly prepared for the boating season.

Plan ahead. Remember when things go wrong on the water, it happens very quickly and you don’t always have time to react. A prudent skipper always discusses his or her plans with a family member before they set out. Have a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or an approved lifejacket for everyone on board

Boaters caught drinking and boating in Ontario face similar consequences to those caught drinking and driving in motor vehicles. Boaters also face an immediate licence suspension for having a BAC in the Warn Range of 50-80mg.

The OPP will maintain a strong and consistent presence on and off the waterways this weekend which include Brighton Bay and the Murray Canal. Education and enforcement action will be taken when necessary to ensure the safety of all boaters and fishing enthusiasts.

Remember, any amount of alcohol and boating is a dangerous combination.
