Last month a Winghamite was pulled over by the Wingham police. The actions and comments of the officer were deemed inappropriate and unprofessional by the driver. The driver immediately went to the Wingham police station to file a Freedom of Information Request for a copy of the police body cam video and the cruiser dash cam of the incident.
It should be noted that at the time of the incident the Wingham police were negotiating their contract with North Huron. The victim was repeatedly assured the video would be handed over to him. The police strung him along for the full 30 days they have to respond to a Freedom Of Information Request. When the 30 days expired, the Wingham Police refused to release the body cam or the cruiser dash cam video of the incident to the victim. The driver/victim is a well-known supporter of switching from Wingham police to the OPP.
Now you might think the police have stooped to a new low by refusing to give the victim a copy of the video, and that in a Free Society the police should be held to account for their actions. Over the years we have received many similar disturbing reports, and we hoped the new body-cams would bring an end to this type of abuse.
WFP has talked to the driver, it is alleged that.
The Wingham police officer refused to identify himself to the driver, despite three requests to do so. This was met with I don’t have to identify myself”.
