(THUNDER BAY, ON) – On Friday, June 2, 2017, at approximately 2:09 pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) were advised of a possible drowning that occurred at Sparkling Lake in the Upsala area.
On May 30, 2017, two males were camping / fishing on Breeze Point Island when they observed their boat floating away. A 57 year old male attempted to retrieve the boat and then suddenly stopped swimming, going limp in the water.
The male that remained on the Island was stranded until he was able to flag down other boaters for assistance on Friday, June 2, 2017.
Daniel HESSELBERG, 57 years of age, from Onalaska, Wisconsin, USA, suffered a medical event while in the water and died at the scene.
The investigation is continuing.
