(MUNICIPALITY OF MEAFORD, ON) – On Thursday, September 26, 2013 at approximately 07:42 a.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a collision involving two military vehicles on Hwy. 26 between the 3rd Line and the Town of Blue Mountains-Meaford Townline, in the Municipality of Meaford.
The two Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFV) were both travelling eastbound on Hwy. 26. The lead vehicle had stopped, causing the second vehicle to collide with the rear end of the lead vehicle. As a result of the collision, approximately 300 litres of diesel was spilled onto the roadway. The Ministry of Environment attended the scene. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
In total, 7 soldiers were transported to hospital; 4 to Meaford and 3 to Collingwood. Their injuries were non life-threatening.
The Meaford and District Fire Department, Grey County Emergency Services (EMS), Simcoe County Emergency Services (EMS), Blue Mountain OPP, Military Police, the Military Mobile Support Equipment Safety Officers from Petawawa and Meaford; as well as the Ministry of Transportation assisted at the scene.
Hwy. 26 between the 3rd Line and the Town of Blue Mountains-Meaford Townline is expected to remain closed for approximately another hour for emergency responders at the scene.
