(ORILLIA, ON) – Members with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Anti-Rackets Branch Health Fraud Investigation Unit have charged a doctor/owner of a Mississauga medical clinic.
A case referral was received from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) after the MOHLTC received complaints regarding the AIMS Multi Specialty Clinic. The complaints were based on patients attending this clinic and being unnecessarily referred to other doctors at the clinic. The MOHLTC later received additional complaints of a similar nature and the file was referred to the OPP Health Fraud Unit.
As a result, Doctor Carlo MEOLA – aged 59 years of Mississauga, is charged with Fraud Over $5000, contrary to section 380(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada. He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on March 1st, 2016.
Police allege that the fraudulent billings submitted to MOHLTC have been occurring on a continual basis and the fraud value is significant. This complex investigation is ongoing and additional details may be released at a later date.
