Two Trying To Pass Transport Truck Results In Collision And Downed Power Lines

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH SOUTH, ON) – On Thursday April 14, 2016, shortly before 10:30 p.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were called to Hwy 7 between Line 16 and Perth Line 20 in response to a collision.

Investigation revealed that a tractor trailer was driving north bound on Hwy 7 followed by a number of vehicles. The last of these vehicles, proceeded to pass the tractor trailer as well as the vehicles that were following it. As the passing vehicle was nearing the car immediately following the tractor trailer, the car following the tractor trailer also pulled out to pass. This forced the car that was already passing, to pull onto the west shoulder where it lost control and struck a hydro pole. The impact with the hydro pole caused the line to sag across the Hwy. A short time later another north bound truck struck the low hanging hydro line and brought down the hydro line and a number of poles.

The driver of the car that struck the hydro pole, a 42-year-old St. Marys male, was transported to local hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Hwy 7 between Line 16 and Perth Line 20 remained closed until shortly after 6 a.m. Friday April 15, 2016. This allowed for the safe replacement and repair of the damaged hydro poles/lines.

The Perth County OPP is continuing its investigation into this collision.
