(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON.) – The City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently utilizing a new tool that assists with traffic enforcement.
The cruiser uses Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) equipment to assist the officer with the identification of potential offences associated with motor vehicles. As the officer patrols the highways the ALPR reads the licence plate of vehicles in the vicinity.
On May 30, 2015 while on patrol an officer was alerted by the ALPR that a vehicle was potentially being operated by a suspended driver. Further investigation confirmed that Renee PITTMAN, 47 years of age, of Kirkfield was driving while suspended. A short time after that vehicle stop, the ALPR alerted the officer to a second vehicle being potentially operated by a suspended driver. This too was confirmed and John JORDAN, 58 years of age, of North York was charged with driving while suspended.
Detachment commander, Acting Inspector David Bowles states “The ALPR supports the OPP’s commitment to integrating the use of technology to assist with enhanced efficiency and productivity. This tool will assist officers with keeping our highways safe”.
