(PENETANGUISHENE, ON) – On Sunday January 8, 2016 at approximately 2:52 p.m. members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call that two snowmobiles had gone through the ice. The incident took place approximately 150 metres off shore on McArthur Drive in Penetanguishene in the area of Tay Point.
The two snowmobile operators were able to make it safely to shore. One snowmobile remains fully submerged and the second is partially submerged in the water. A pilon has been placed in the area to alert other riders. There were no injuries as a result of this incident.
The water is still not fully frozen over and therefore not safe for snowmobiling. The OPP are asking snowmobile operators to stay off the ice at this time as it is unsafe. A Canadian Coast Guard ship is making its way to the Midland area which will have an impact on the safety conditions of the ice.
On Monday January 9 2017 the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Samuel Risley will once again be icebreaking to assist a commercial ship through the ice-covered waters of Severn Sound and into the Midland Ontario Harbour.
