Two Men Rescued After Falling Through Ice

(ALNWICK-HALDIMAND TOWNSHIP, ON) – Members of the Northumberland County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with emergency crews were called to assist two fishermen who had broken through the ice near Dunette Landing on Rice Lake shortly after 1:30pm yesterday.

Members of the Alnwick-Haldimand Fire Service were able to quickly rescue the men from the icy waters. Both males (age 40 and 42) are from the Markham-Stouffville area and were transported to a Northumberland area hospital. They are expected to recover from injuries related to cold water exposure.

Due to the unseasonably mild weather the region lately, local lakes and rivers have become highly unstable. The OPP wish to remind area residents and visiting fishermen that venturing out on the ice during this transition period is extremely dangerous and can have tragic outcomes.

The Ontario Provincial Police is committed to public safety, delivering proactive and innovative policing in partnership with our communities.
