(Ottawa) — The Ottawa Police Service has charged two men following an assault on police officers last evening near the intersection of William and York Streets.
On September 11, 2015 around midnight, a male stepped off the curb into traffic directly in front of a patrol officer in a marked cruiser.
The officer asked the male to move off the street for his own safety and the male refused to move and became aggressive. The officer approached on foot and the male assaulted the officer.
The officer attempted to place the male suspect under arrest and a physical confrontation ensued. The suspect disarmed the officer of his baton and attempted to hit the officer with it.
Calls for help were made and an officer soon arrived on scene. The male suspect then also assaulted this officer. Other officers attended the call and were eventually able to apprehend the suspect and take him into custody.
During the struggle to apprehend the suspect, a group of passersby entered the crime scene, when ordered not to by police. A male from this group was subsequently arrested for uttering threats and obstruct police.
One officer sustained serious injuries to his hand during the altercation.
As a result, Carl BERNADE, 22 years old, of Ottawa was charged with:
Assault peace officer with a weapon
Assault a peace officer X2
Disarming a peace officer
Resisting arrest X2
Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public
Disobeying a court order
Elvin MUSONGE, 24 years old, of Ottawa was charged with:
Resist Arrest
Obstruct Police
Uttering threats
Bernade was sent for show cause and Musonge was released on a promise to appear.
