Two Drivers Charged With Race A Motor Vehicle

(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – On April 23, 2016, at approximately 1:45 p.m., a Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Highway 402, near Hickory Drive, in the Municipality of Strathroy Caradoc, Ontario.

The vehicle, a black Mercedes car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 km/r over the 100 km/h speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, the driver, a 52-year-old female, from Sarnia, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

On April 23, 2016, at approximately 1:58 p.m., an OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD) officer observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed westbound on Pack Road, in the City of London, Ontario.

The vehicle, a red Dodge car, was measured to be travelling in excess of twice the posted 70 kilometer per hour (km/hr) speed limit.

A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, the driver, a 47-year-old male, from London, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.

Both drivers’ vehicles were seized, and their driver’s licences were suspended, for 7 days.

The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver’s Handbook states: “The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits. For example, on roads with a posted limit of 60 km/h or less, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost eight times greater for vehicles colliding at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit.”
