Two Bodies Found After Residential Fire Extinguished

(HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON) – On Friday October 30, 2015, at 9:16a.m., officers from the Haldimand County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a residential structure fire at a home located on Lakeshore Road, Haldimand County, ON.

Upon arrival at the scene. responding OPP officers observed the Haldimand County Fire Service working to extinguish the now fully engulfed two-story home. While this was taking place, attempts to locate the homeowners were undertaken by the police. It wasn’t until after the fire was extinguished that the home could be closely examined and it was at that time that human remains were located.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was commenced by the Haldimand County Fire Service, the OPP and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal (OFM).

The Haldimand County OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Dave Hillman of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) have been able to determine through post mortem examinations that the remains found in the burned out home are those of 64-year old Howard Barrett and 62-year old Catherine Barrett who resided at the residence.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, the OPP do not believe that there is an issue with respect to public safety and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
