(COUNTY OF BRANT, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police, County of Brant detachment has seen an increase in truck tailgates thefts over the past months, here are some tips and statistics.
While the total number of tailgate thefts isn’t anywhere near as high as vehicle thefts, from 2008 to 2014 the number of tailgate thefts is on the rise.
It takes less than 30 seconds to snatch an unlocked pickup tailgate without the need for tools and thieves turn a profit selling the stolen tailgates. Replacement costs over $1,000 or more for the owner.
Tips to avoid tailgate theft
Use tailgate lock on the vehicle, prevents tailgate from being opened
A thief can’t steal the tailgate without first opening
Aftermarket locks can be purchased to prevent the tailgate from opening
Park close to an object or structure so there’s no room to open the tailgate
Police are also reminding owners to lock their vehicle doors to prevent further automobile thefts and loss of property.
