On March 18, 2014 at 10:15 p.m., the Guelph Police went to Wyndham Street South to investigate the report of the train bridge being struck. It is alleged that a tractor trailer, being operated by a 50-year-old male from Courtland, Ontario, was travelling southbound on Wyndham through the downtown. The driver disobeyed four posted signs indicating a height warning but also no overweight trucks under the Wyndham St S rail bridge. As the driver attempted to travel under the bridge, the top of the trailer struck the crash beam of the bridge causing damage to the sheet metal flashing.
Estimated damage to the trailer is $2,000 and estimated damage to the crash beam is $1,000.
The southbound lane of Wyndham was closed for a period of time while police investigated. The driver has been charged for disobeying a sign contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
