(HEARST, ON) – On August 15, 2016, at approximately 9:10 p.m., members of the James Bay Detachments Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 11 in Gill Township, which led to the occupants being arrested.
As a result of the investigation, police seized cannabis marihuana, cannabis resin and methamphetamine with a combined estimated street value of approximately $7000. Police also located and seized a firearm.
The driver, Rebekka MORENCY, 27, of Greenstone, has been charged with the following offences:
Speeding contrary to section 128 of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario;
Adult Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
Adult Occupant of Motor Vehicle knowing there was Firearm contrary to section 94 CC
Two counts – Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Marihuana contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine contrary to section 5(2) CDSA
Four counts – Fail to Comply with Recognizance contrary to section 145(3) CC;
Fail to Comply with Conditions of Undertaking Given by Officer in Charge contrary to section 145 (5.1) CC
The passenger, Michael RIOPEL, 33, of Greenstone, has been charged with the following offences:
Adult Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
Adult Occupant of Motor Vehicle knowing there was Firearm contrary to section 94 CC
Adult Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order contrary to section 117.01(1) CC
Two counts – Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Marihuana contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)
Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine contrary to section 5(2) CDSA
Adult Obstruct Peace Officer contrary to section 129(a) CC
Both accused persons have been remanded into custody and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Kapuskasing, on September 6, 2016.
