TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT

(CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES, ON.) – Officers from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol using the latest tool available to them – the Automated Licence Plate Recognition System – and the results were alarming.

The system reads licence plates of vehicles approaching the police cruiser and almost immediately provides the officer with information related to numerous offences, including expired validation permits, if the plate was stolen and the status of the registered owner’s driver’s licence.

On July 9, 2014 the system was used within the City of Kawartha Lakes and assisted officers with identifying and then laying 13 offences, including 3 drivers caught driving while suspended and 1 driving without a licence.

Donald HELLEMAN, 33 years of age, of Lindsay, was stopped and subsequently charged with driving while under suspension and failing to surrender permit, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, as well as with failing to produce an insurance card, contrary to the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. The accused will appear in court, in Lindsay on August 12, 2014.

John STEPHANIS, 45 years of age, of Orillia was charged with driving while under suspension and driving with an expired validation permit. The accused will appear in court, in Lindsay on August 12, 2014.

Leigh TRETHEWAY, 49 years of age, of Fenelon Falls, was charged with driving while under suspension. The accused will appear in court, in Lindsay, on August 12, 2014.
